2013 Cabernet Franc

Posted on 24 February, 2017 at 19:20 Comments comments (1)

If you haven't tried the most recent addition to our current wines, 2013 Cabernet Franc, you really must purchase a bottle. It is available to taste in our wine tasting room at the winery if you don't want to take my word for it. At only $44 per bottle it's a great value high quality wine that will boost your spirits when you taste it. Carlos has done it again. This wine is so smooth and well-balanced, with beautifully integrated fine tannins, French oak finesse and flavours of fresh, perfectly ripened strawberries and raspberries. For those of you who enjoy a bit of a floral touch to your reds, this one has it, along with subtle flavours of bell peppers and soft spices. I encourage you to come to the winery to try it for yourself. This wine is sold only at the winery for the time being.

Did you know that Cabernet Franc is one of B.C.'s finest grapes? It grows in ideal conditions in the southern Okanagan Valley. Cabernet Franc ripens a little earlier than its son Cabernet Sauvignon (a fun fact is that Cabernet Franc crossed with Sauvignon Blanc and produced Cabernet Sauvignon grapes) and it produces a lighter coloured and bodied wine than Cabernet Sauvignon. I find that Cabernet Franc is a tasty wine to drink without food, and it pairs so well with roasted lamb dishes and many vegetarian creations.

Wine collectors can keep this wine in the cellar for another 5-10 years. It is already over three years aged and is definitely ready to drink now as well. This wine is best served at a cool room temperature (around 18C). Decant for a smoother mouthfeel. Enjoy!

Winemaker's Dinner Jan. 28th, 2017

Posted on 31 January, 2017 at 19:00 Comments comments (0)

Winemaker's dinners at Blackwood Lane are always a great occasion. Each year we host a dinner to help Carlos celebrate his birthday in January, and we occasionally put on one or two throughout the year.  If you enjoy eating creatively designed dishes, along with delicious wines, you must plan to attend at least one of these specal dinner events.

This year we featured a four course dinner prepared by Janik, a food passionate Chef, who has extensive cooking experience working at such venues as The Fairmont Hotel for discerning guests. His dishes were put together with delectable ingredients that wowed our palates. Each plate was assembled beautifully as well. We paired each course with Blackwood Lane wines that were chosen to bring out the best in each dish and the best in each wine.

The evening began with canapes that were to die for, including a Mojito Ceviche. Janik's first course was Plated Shaved Asparagus Salad which we paired with Carlos' special reserve sparkling Riesling. Second course was a Butternut Squash and Sage Soup, paired with Seabuckthorn Riesling. Third course was the entree, Porchetta, which was stuffed pork loin served with seasonal vegetables in a Dijon apple au jus. This we paired with our Signature Bordeaux style wine "Alliance". For dessert Janik served us Ginger Pear parfait, which was paired with our dessert wine "Portance" (a Vintage Port style wine).

Well, I hope I have convinced you to join us for our next Winemaker's Dinner here at the winery. It's always a special treat for your tastebuds. Upcoming events are posted on our web page "Events".

Here are some photos of a couple of Janik's dishes from the evening. Bon Apetit!

Wine, pizza and a guitarist strumming out romantic melodies! What more can you ask for?

This past Saturday Toby Beaulieu joined us in the Solarium to serenade our guests with beautiful music. He added a soft, romantic air to the winery while our guests relaxed and visited with each other. Our mini bistro pumped out homemade pizzas, papaya bruschetta, and a decadent chocolate mousse infused with Blackwood Lane Port.

We plan many more nights like this over the Fall and Winter months. Come join us!

You can find out what's coming up on our Events page.

Awesome Party!

We really got into the spirit for this year's Halloween Party at Blackwood Lane. It was amazing! Guests arrived in imaginative costumes to be rivaled by the best! Up for the prize for best costume was a bottle of 2008 Reference! Our Premium Bordeaux blend ($150/bottle)! We had Darth Vader, The three little pigs and the Big Bad Wolf, a Wine Fairy and Autumn Fairy, Crocodile Dundee, an awesome skeleton, Superman in cognito, kitty cats, a little one in Clockwork Orange garb and even a weiner dog dressed as a hot dog, etc.! The prize for best costume was won by CAROLYN SLATTEN AND HER PARTNER TIM, who dressed up in Steam Punk costume. Well done!

We also had a contest for who could guess the number of corks in the wine jug. Carlos generously put up a MAGNUM OF 2008 REFERENCE for the person who could correctly guess the exact number! Carlos, you're so generous!!!! Amazingly enough, someone actually guessed  the exact number!!! Congratulations goes to CATRINA JACKSON who guessed right on the nose and won the Magnum of Reference, worth $300!!! Are you psychic?/ Wow!!

If you weren't there you missed a great performance by Zeus (Jesus) Cancino on guitar and his box drum accompanist Mike who played an acoustic mix of contemporary songs and an oldie mixed in here and there, including Carlos' fave "La Bamba". We hope they'll come back again!

A special shout out to Global News celebrity Kaitlyn Herbst who made an apprearance, despite her busy schedule! Great to see you!

Complimentary, made from scratch pizzas, were served, and various snacks to keep the crowd energized.

Wine Challenge Feb. 5th, 2016

Posted on 20 February, 2016 at 18:55 Comments comments (1)

Thank you to all of our Friday Night guests who brought a great line-up of contending wines for our latest Friday night wine challenge at the winery! We tried a couple of Spanish wines, a Rhone Valley, a Californian Cab and an Italian wine. These are my tasting notes:

2009 Rioja “Roda” Reserva, DOCa, made from 89% Tempranillo and 11% Graciano grapes. Meaty, plummy aromas and flavours of sweet red plums, raspberries and Red Delicious apples, with a touch of Chinese Five Spice and a fine earthiness. (paired with Blackwood Lane Merlot).

Ribera Del Duero “Anier” Vendimia Seleccionada DO, 100% Tempranillo (won the 2012 Concours Mondial Bruxelles gold medal). Smoky, toffee nose; rich, slightly sweet, good acidity, flavours of blackberry, red plums and apple sauce, with a long, fruity finish. (Paired with Blackwood Lane Merlot).

2011 Paso Robles “Project Paso” Cabernet Sauvignon. Leafy, floral and slight chocolate aromas; rich flavours of cherry, red currant, sweet cedar, hint of anise, with a fruity finish. (Paired with Blackwood Lane 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon).

2012 Chateauneuf-du-Pape “Chateau de Beaucastel”. Cinsault 5%, Counoise 10%, Grenache 30%, Mourvedre 30%, Syrah 10%. Plummy, earthy, slight peppery aromas. Smooth, rich, nicely integrated flavours of cherry, red plum and raspberry, good acidity and fine tannins. (Paired with Blackwood Lane 2009 Pinot Noir).

All were enjoyable wines for sure; however, for me the Chateauneuf-du-Pape stood out as my favourite overall (besides the Blackwood Lane wines of course! ). We had a real treat, as Carlos decided the only wine we could match to this one in flavours and style would be our 2009 Pinot Noir. It’s a rare occasion when this wine comes out of our cellar library! It still rocks big time and was a real hit. Both wines were exceptional, with Blackwood Lane inching ahead with more pretty layers, complexity and big strawberry flavours. Considering that the BWL Pinot Noir is a single varietal wine as compared to the blend of a few grapes that make up the Chateauneuf-du-Pape, kudos go to the BWL Pinot!

I don’t have the details of the Italian wine brought, since it was decided that it wasn’t at its best and was too expensive to overlook that fact, so was destined to be returned to the store.

If you wish to join us for our next Friday Night Wine Challenge, let us know so we can reserve seats for you. The Challenge is a friendly one, no snobbery intended. It’s a fun way to try different wines and maybe learn a bit more about the wines. Occasionally Carlos pulls a special wine out of his personal reserve as well! Seats are reserved for our wine club members.

2007 Riesling

Posted on 20 January, 2016 at 19:25 Comments comments (0)

Sometimes working at a winery is as glamorous as it sounds. When you get to try a special wine that is pulled out of the dusty cellar, you may as well admit you're pretty spoiled!

This time the wine was an aged Riesling -- a 2007 Blackwood Lane Riesling made from grapes grown in an Oliver vineyard to be exact. This wine is medium gold in colour, showing its eight years of age. The nose is complex and sweet with soft notes of petrol and minerality. Mature aromas of ripe pear, apple pie and lemon. It's off-dry with a satisfyingly perfect balance of sweetness, fruitiness and acidity. Lots of sweet quince, apple sauce and juicy ripe pears on the palate, and a complex mouth watering aged quality. Sweet, perfectly ripe pineapple on the finish. Its flavours are reminiscent of a Sauterne.

We have a few bottles left in stock. I predict this wine will hold up for another few years, but it's absolutely perfect at the moment. If you're interested in twisting Carlos' arm to get a bottle of this wine, you could possibly talk him into it. It's definitely worth the now $49 library wine price tag.

Btw, thank you to all of our winery friends who stopped in to wish Carlos a Happy Birthday on Sunday at the winery. You helped make it a fun day!

Merry Christmas

What would you like for Christmas?

A bottle of Alliance or Reference you say??

This is a great time to come to the winery to purchase your favourite Blackwood Lane wines, as during the month of December our wines are on sale! Take 25% off the regular price of Alliance, Reference, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Until Christmas we also have a rare addition to our list of wines available, and that is the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon, Limited Edition. What a scrumptious wine this is too! It’s a single barrel bottling from one of the best vineyards we grow our grapes at in Osoyoos. For this limited amount of time it is on our shelves at a sale price of only $68 (please note that there is no further discount for the Cabernet Sauvignon, The Rebel and Riesling during our December sale).

Something else that’s NEW at Blackwood Lane is our electric car charging station. It quick charges your electric car while you’re nice and warm inside the wine tasting room, sampling delicious wines! As you may know, Carlos drives an electric Prius, so this project helps him to fully charge his car in just one hour. We’re doing our part in working towards making a smaller carbon footprint on our planet.

The holidays are upon us, so we want to wish all of you, our loyal Blackwood Lane customers, a very

Don’t be a stranger, come to the winery and hang out at the wine bar for awhile. We keep adding new releases lately that you can try.

Cheers from

Alliance Vertical tasting

Posted on 3 December, 2015 at 18:55

Here are the tasting notes for our recent Alliance vertical 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2008. We were very happy to have had a few of our cherished Wine Club members join us to give their thoughts on each vintage as well. Alliance is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot.

2004 Alliance:

Our first Blackwood Lane wine! The 2004 offers a mature nose with soft aromas of chocolate, cassis, black fruit, leather & graphite. This wine is smooth and silky on the palate with a substantial presence of fine tannins. Earthy with deep, mellow fruity flavours of black plums and red delicious apples. Drink now, up to the next 5 years.

2006 Alliance:

A complex fruity nose of cassis and red plums; also, graphite, chocolate and violets. Still has vibrant red berry fruit and some texture to the appearance. Juicy red berries, red plums, cherries, graphite, tea and sweet oak on the palate. The flavours hold up well after lengthy decanting and open up beautifully. Drink now, up to the next 8 years.

2007 Alliance:

An elegant vintage of Alliance with earthy, gamey, leathery aromas. This wine has a fine root vegetable and floral quality. Dry and smooth, with mouth watering red berries, black fruit, roasted root vegetables and a complex, leathery long finish. Drink now, up to the next 10 years.

2008 Alliance:

The winner, according to majority consensus of our taste panel. Has a tantalizing and complex floral nose, with fragrant plums, candied apples, blackberries, graphite, leather and cedar. This wine is rich, smooth and vibrant from start to finish with flavours of black cherries, red plums, raspberries and has a fine sous bois quality. The finish is very long and satisfying. Drink now, up to the next 10 years.
